JOZEF VAN WISSEM (NL)
Incunabulum / sacred bones
Iconic Dutch composer and minimal musician, Jozef Van Wissem is known for his punk approach to a classical instrument such as the lute. Through the use of the cut-up technique on medieval scores he has given new life to Renaissance and Baroque music, always preserving its harmonic elegance in a sort of extreme, unstructured classicism akin to the aesthetics of the Throbbing Gristle school.
With over thirty releases from 2000 to today, his discography is the mirror of an extremely prolific creativity that ranges from folk to noise, from jazz to more abstract electronica, through a myriad of collaborations among which those with Zola Jesus stand out, Tilda Swinton, Jarboe, Domingæ of Föllakzoid, Maurizio Bianchi, James Blackshaw and filmmaker and experimental musician Jim Jarmush. For the latter he composed the soundtrack of “Only Lovers Left Alive” which earned him the Cannes prize in 2013.
His latest solo album, released a year ago, is “Behold! I Make All Things New”, while his new album in collaboration with Jim Jarmush, “American Landscapes”, was released in March.
