ZHU QUARTET (IT)
Zhu Quartet was born from the compositional effort of the Paduan double bass player Alberto Zuanon, accompanied by Lorenzo De Luca, Paolo Vianello and Stefano Cosi. The quartet’s songs, inspired by modern jazz, start from minimal melodic ideas that hold distant and complex harmonic worlds together, leaving ample space for improvisation and interplay.
The name of the quartet plays on the assonance with the surname Zuanon, but can also take on the meaning of “guide” or “master” in Chinese culture: in this context the guiding figure is represented by the Music itself which inspires and orients the compositional flow .
The quartet’s album, “Ginkgo”, takes inspiration from the ancient oriental Ginkgo Biloba tree, symbolizing a mood of peace and serenity that permeates every song on the record. “When I was little I planted a young Ginkgo Biloba in the garden”, says Alberto Zuanon. “Over the years the Ginkgo has grown together with me, always representing a fixed point, a reference, a refuge capable of infusing me with peace and trust. The Ginkgo leaves, in their golden autumnal guise, are the image that best describes the period in which the compositions were born.”
